Some of us want to go a little deeper when we travel but do not always have time to volunteer or do local homestays in remote areas, and our Reality tour is perfect for this! This special cultural Lima tour visits the small, communal restaurants of Villa El Salvador. This little visited area is an award-winning district of Peru’s capital will give you authentic interaction with lower income women while you help to cook a meal for the families and workers in the area.
This is a unique cultural insight into the poorer areas of Lima, far from the tourist areas and a true “reality tour” of Lima. A wonderful alternative or addition to a Lima city tour!
This is the perfect option for families with older children who are looking to show them a different side of life.
This tour is $125 per person (2 -8 people in group.)
6 hours. Start time 8.30am, Finish time 2.30pm.
Your day tour from Lima will start when you are picked up from your hotel at approximately 8:00am and bought to the district of Villa El Salvador. In 1970, this area was a barren piece of desert when it was given to the families from the highlands who had moved to Lima throughout the 60’s. The community itself was therefore responsible for the planning of the entire district and turned it into one of, if not the best planned district of Lima. With common spaces for each “block” including a community centre and small soccer field, areas designated for the hospital, the university, etc… even when they were years, even decades away from being built. As part of this planning, a small communal kitchen was set up to be able to provide affordable meals for low-income residents.
This morning after stopping by the local market and purchasing something for the women of the communal kitchen, you will help to prepare the food; which might be washing potatoes, cutting vegetables or meat or keeping an eye on the stove to make sure that things are not burning. Once the food is ready you will then help the workers serve people as they arrive to enjoy their home-cooked lunch. But the best part of the day is that you will be able to talk to women (directly if you speak Spanish or through the guide if you do not) and find out about their lives, their families and their dreams. This is not your typical Lima City tour – it’s an eye opening half day excursion into Lima that will reveal much more than your standard Lima tour!
After a hard morning’s work, you will say good-bye to the women and head out for your own lunch.* With your bellies full and your hearts content you will be brought back to your hotel where you will be able to process the day’s experience.
*For those of you wondering why you don’t eat there, it is because the food sometimes runs out and we need to make sure that those in need can have access to the meal that they are expecting.
